Philly & Frizzy: At The 50 Cent Box

50centcomix 25When we first got to Chicago, we knew we had a lot of great comic shops to visit and boxes to thumb through. The walls of new comics in shops like Chicago Comics and Graham Crackers Comic Books are great indicators that the comics industry is chugging along, but it was the discounted archives in the dusty, dank basements underneath that provided the most fascinating look into a medium that has always found a home in obscurity.

Action & Apathy Blues

A lot of boiling-over occurred in 2015 when it came to protests against police violence in the black community and the anger of an exploited middle class. Chicago saw the clashes up close. Lumpen Magazine # 127 is an edition that applauds the efforts of community activists and those willing to stand up to the injustices of a corrupt political system.

‘Action and Apathy Blues’ is our addition to the issue and touches on the malaise of believing something needs to change and what we can do about it.

Esoteric Dialogue #1 extras

The story, characters, visual style and… well just about everything in ED#1 was the result of an evolution process. We had a lot of ideas, scratched most of them, and crafted the best ones draft after draft. Below are some of those ideas and Matt’s sketches that didn’t make it into the final book.

table1

An early drawing of the Illuminati performing a dark ritual in the form of a board game.

ad1

Drawings from an idea for a fake gimmick ad page.

gold1

Page from a “history” segment.

monsters1

An unfinished promo page featuring Bigfoot, the Mothman, a Grey alien, and a UFO. Oh yeah, and two teens slurping on each other.

politics1

An unfinished comic Matt was working on that showed a media-brainwashed dude that ends up blowing up the planet.

shelly1

A page from an old ED story idea about Shelly Shivers, an all-American girl who becomes a witch through playing D&D, which was inspired by the old Chick comic written by the infamous John Todd.

sitchin1

Another page from the “history” segment.

thoeries1

A promo page featuring poster-like panels of various conspiracy theories.

vatican1

A page from the very first ED story idea inspired by an interview I heard on Coast to Coast with George Noory about a child sacrifice that took place in the catacombs of the Vatican.

Ghost Dance

We’re very grateful to be a part of Lumpen Magazine‘s 2015 all-comics issue. The theme of the issue is “Radio” to commemorate WLPN Lumpen Radio’s launch to 105.5 FM in Chicago (www.lumpenradio.com). WLPN is a volunteer-run community radio station based in the Bridgeport neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. Logan and Edmar even give me a bit of airtime on their waves with The Butter Hours – a two-hour late-night music mix my good friend, Eric Streichert, and I do every first and third Tuesday of the month 10pm-12am CST (@TheButterHours). These are some really tuned-in community-minded cats running this weirdo media empire, and we’re really digging getting involved. You can order copies of the most current and back issues at www.lumpenmagazine.org.

We’ll be at Short Run in Seattle!

The good people at Short Run deemed us worthy to table at the show on October 31 in Seattle. And, even though we didn’t win the Dash Grant, they gave us a little write-up on ShortRun.org:

We were super impressed with Esoteric #1 and #2, floppy comics that are filled with weird and wonderful lizard people, aliens, eyeball creatures, the Illuminati, and incredible drawing (we thought at one point they got Kim Deitch to draw for them!). Matthew Salazar, as the illustrator, changes up his style in the different stories written by Scott Bufis. They are a great team!

Many thanks to the Short Run team.

See ya at the show.
